Not sure what happened since our last few visits that were all good but we got the bum's rush, locals only vibe at the small bar area this time around. Nobody was really rude, except maybe the blowhard sitting next to us, but it was clear that they'd rather we vacate the bar stools quickly even though we just spent $80 on drinks and breakfast for 2 and were still ordering more beers. After placing the bill down harder and harder each time we ordered a beer - we got the hint. Glad Joe gave the guy grabbing his stool before he got up a shoulder shiver.

Really nice unique atmosphere . Good breakfast . I like they're OJ. Service was little slow

This has been one of my favorite places for breakfast for quite a few years. I kind of wish they could incorporate a mimosa or Bloody Mary special with their weekend brunch, but that's about it. The food is consistently good but the staff can be hit or miss, in all honesty. But this will continue to be one of my favorite hometown places!

Excellent food except the french toast. Avoid that. The hash browns have not changed for the better either. New owners have taken a great place to the next level maintaining all the character and what made the place famous in the first place and it's really nice. Portion size varies from visit to visit. Expanded menu but still no Chorizo and eggs. Service is from good to goofy and stupid. You can see why Cappy used to get so worked up over bad service. Screwy parking but this is NPB, it's always been that way everywhere here. Servers are much less stressed, but still over-worked and spread thin some shifts and that will slow everything down. We've been dining at Cappy's for years. Last three visits we got stuck with the same server. We tip well, and don't complain but wish she'd quit.

Cappy's is your neighborhood diner near the beach. Usually end up coming here when the line is too long at Eat Chow. Usually not a long wait. The food isn't anything to rave about but it's pretty standard and they have huge portions. My favorites are the Mexican breakfasts. Service is friendly and fast - you will always have a full cup of joe.

Solid comfort food. I mean you can't complain about having the option of biscuit and gravy on the side (which I obviously had to get). Can't give the place a solid four because the food is okay but not great, although it does hurt my heart to say this. They have a plethora of options ranging from what seams to be a thousand different omelet options to waffles to grilled pork chop or bone in ham. I do want to definitely recommend the side of biscuit and gravy as well as the waffles. The waffles are pretty damn good; they have a crunchy outside while maintaining a soft pillowy inside.

In typical foodie fashion, I suggested breakfast with my pals Jennie and Ryan at the tried, true, and always delicious Eat Chow in Costa Mesa as a "thank you" for their future puppy-sitting gig over Memorial Day. Much to our disappoinment, they experienced a block-wide power outage attributed to a car accident nearby just before we could order. So bummed! Being still a tad unfamiliar with the area, I looked to my locals for another suggestion...enter Cappy's. Now one would assume that this restaurant, sitting on a PRIME-ASS piece of Pacific Coast Highway real estate, would seriously deliver a bomb menu. One would assume wrong. This place is a classic, Americana, mom and pop diner. And by that I mean one that your ELDERLY mom and pop frequent. A Newport Beach fixture, if you will. And I think Nana at booth 8 has likely been a fixture as long as the aged table she was parked at. My expectation for the Eggs Florenine was unmatched by the delivered food. I should have ordered pancakes like Jennie. The basics looked solidly presented. Worth noting: The server girls were all sweet and attentive, refilling our iced teas promptly. I'm sorry, Cappy's. You are what you are without apologizing, so for that I commend you. If I ever have occassion to return I'm getting the pancakes.

It has been brought to my attention that Cappy's is THE place to hit up if you're close by and suffering a huge hangover. Next time, I'm ordering a Bloody Mary!

  • Maria T.

Let's be real for one Newport drunken minute. Cappy's is a staple...a landmark some would say. A morning hangover pit-stop after your Friday and Saturday night drunken Newport scavenger hunt. The food is average, but its a hung over persons dream especially when you pair it with a nice bloody, a zesty mimosa or even some of the hair of the dog that bit ya the night before. You go because its Cappy's! You go because you want the grease to settle the stomach! You go because its fast! You go because its close!

Avoid crab omelet. Crab tastes old/canned. Waitstaff hit or miss. Other table's waitress kept bumping into me squeezing past her oversize party. Last straw was when she wanted to squeeze by carrying coffee over my head

Breakfast today at Cappy's. We eat there monthly. Place is loud and crowded, but staff is great, kitchen is fast and the food is very consistent!!! I recommend the beach burrito or the hot cakes. I will add some pictures next time I dine at Cappy's.

Portions are big and tastes pretty good. I came a few years ago and the waitresses used to wear short shorts and that's gone, but the improvement in the food makes up for it.

Finally knocked this place off my foodie bucket list LOL. I've been passing this place for EONS on PCH and now I had a chance! My friend is still new to the area and he always wants to eat by the damn water , for brunch and is last minute on top of that !!!!! He doesn't know OC and their Brunch scene LOL. Plus he was dressed toooooo casual for what I had in mind so I said let's pick a low key spot. So Cappy's was perfect. The parking is NUTSO! But I have parking Karma so we see a spot within 2 minutes or so. We walk in and I didn't see a crazy wait like I though there would be. I tell the hostess, I'd like that booth over to the right that's being cleaned off and she cut me off real quick, "it goes by the list." Ok ok ok no problem girly. I sat my fluffy ass down on the waiting area couch and literally a minute later she goes" You can be seated." LOL and guess where, the booth I wanted! Sneaky girl :p The waitresses and drink girls are on it here! Never felt thirsty not once throughout the whole meal. So we sat there and checked the menu out. Now I came here for the steak skillet because my IG friend posted some food porn of that dish and I knew I had to get it BUT the menu is quite large and you can change your mind so many times!!!!!! But I held it down and stuck to what I was there for! Sadly this skillet was LAAAAAAAAAACKKKKKKING! I thought this shit would have eggs under the hashbrowns. No eggs and no cheese in this dish WTF WTF! I never seen a skillet without these two major staples! So I had to ask for a side of shredded cheese and salsa to moisten the dish. This dish is loaded with onions, peppers, hashbrowns (swapped out the homefries) and I added green chilis. Sadly they didn't season this dish fer shit and my steak was overcooked :( I took it home and doctored the hell out of this. I was sad for my meal but my friend LOOOOOOOOVED his breakfast, he was like this is on my list of regulars to go to when I'm in the area! Honestly what's most important is the person whose paying is enjoying their meal so he can pay away LOL. I was also jealous of the booth in front of my, they had bomb ass looking Mexican dishes with LOADS of melty cheese and sauce! Their food looked nice and moist! Normally I wouldn't come back if I give a spot two stars. But the service was great, I enjoyed the vibe here and there are many other food options on the menu you to try. I will give them one more try and if it sucks again, I will keep passing them by like I did for the past years LOL

What a great local breakfast joint, right down on PCH. I found this place one weekend, and have to say that the food, the service and the old time diner atmosphere made my day. The waitresses were great at keeping my drink filled up, the cooks made my skillet perfect, and the overall breakfast just hit the spot, right down to the To Go coffee they made me. I recommend Cappy's!

We came in here on July 4th and were very happy with our choice! It was early afternoon but we didn't feel like battling the downtown NB or HB crowds so we thought we'd give Cappy's a try. We got the Beach Burrito and the Stuffed French Toast. Both were good! Nothing spectacular, but tasty and hit the spot. They serve mimosas even though they aren't on the menu (just as an FYI). Service was great too!

This place is a great find. My wife and I set out for an adventure on a Saturday morning with the goal of eating at a random place we found along PCH. After driving by many eateries, we decided to stop in at Cappy's. What a great decision. I got the prime rib melt and she got the Chinese chicken salad. The food was great! Although my fries tasted as if they had been reheated. But that was my only complaint. Service was extremely attentive. Waitresses were sweet. Our drinks literally never got to empty. There were other waitresses that would fill up our drinks if our server was busy. It seems they really work well together. We will definitely be going back. What a great spot.

Alex is the best. She is kind and considerate. Very friendly too. I have always enjoyed going here but she is just the topping on the cake. Our waitress was friendly on top of things. I love the staff and atmosphere of Cappy's. I defiantly would recommend this restaurant to anyone that loves good food and friendly staff.

Wasn't expecting much on a foggy damp morning at the beach. Man, was I wrong!! Don't let the look from the outside fool you. The interior is fresh and attractive. And they understand what a Cali beach breakfast should be. Cappy's is a real contender for best breakfast in the O.C.! I had a fresh and yummy chicken fried steak with country gravy that actually had flavor and a wonderful potato onion breakfast potato side, properly mellowed and caramelized. And they make a great Bloody Mary for the overindulgent imbibers stumbling towards hangover relief. Huge portions, huge windows and a great waitress says, "I'll be coming back again!"

Wondering why this place has less than 5 stars. I had a great breakfast experience at Cappy's. Nice, quick service. Excellent food. Nice location with inside and outside seating. What's not to love?

  • Nick D.

Probably only good if; 1) You're hungover 2) Your pallet isn't strong The coffee is rubbish. They do a great job at watering it down to make it taste like rusty water. The chicken and egg white omelette was decent. A fat Greek bloke (the owner I think) walks around monitoring everything so be sure to chew with your mouth closed or get an evil eye. If you feel like celeb spotting, turn up before 10am and try to catch Dennis Rodman doing flips throughout the diner. It would be a good snapchat.

I sadly was underwhelmed by the food - it was the all-inclusive breakfast offering you crave after a weekend out, but the food was a bit bland and uninteresting, even with the well-though out combinations. Hashbrowns limp, little to no seasoning, but still decent quality ingredients. I think the potential and reality gap is why I was so disappointed. I will say that although they were slammed, the service was top notch. May have forgotten one drink but the waitstaff were running their tails off and still very friendly. May give it another shot when they're not dealing with the post-fourth of July weekend rush.

Pros and Cons Pros 1. Tasty food 2. Good location 3. Affordable Prices Cons 1. Parking is very difficult I came to cappy's recently and was very satisfied with my experience. I ordered the Ranchero Omelette which came with beef, cheese, guacamole, sour cream , and a side. The portions were very large and the prices were affordable. my only complaint is that parking is very difficult.

Cappy's should rename their business to Crappy's. I ordered the El Rollo omelette with a side of seasoned potatoes. The omelette was probably made with the eggs that come out of the carton. I don't think they even seasoned it. I drowned it in Chalula hot sauce to give it some taste. My potatoes were literally seasoned with char and blackened onions. Some pieces had burns to the fourth degree. It was pretty much inedible scraps leftover from the bottom of the skillet. My money is much better spent across the street at Eat Chow.

Meet a girlfriend here on occasion for breakfast and the 3 things I do not like about here is it needs updating(feels very old and stale), parking can be a challenge and all the different food odors when you walk in makes it seem stuffy, old and a bit unappetizing in my opinion. All the windows do not open so very little ventilation. The good things are the great service, quick table turnover and tasty food with large portions. It is a local favorite just not mine.

Cappy's Cafe has a nice, relaxed vibe. All of the staff were very warm and accommodating. We got there early enough that there wasn't a long wait, but the line only continued to grow while we were eating and finishing up. The food was good, but it wasn't great. All of us ordered different things, but nearly everything (except the chorizo!) was slightly bland. The mimosa I ordered, however, was really good.

Excellent Service with a smile... this is a friendly place..... They have a huge menu and everything out group ordered was well done... good ingredients.. .large portions.. and well prepared. I had the special of the day a "Roast Beef Melt" and it was very tasty. I asked for raw horseradish on the side... and it was the real stuff... and great. The sourdough bread was grilled perfectly and the Onion Rings were excellent. I would have given four stars... except for the fact that when I'm traveling to a new place and check for 4 star ratings on Yelp... I expect something really special for four stars. This was good. The experience was fun and value was fine. So 3 stars it is... they were A-OK

The parking g is appropriate for the number of tables. If you can't find parkjng, expect to wait to be served. The food is awesome, servings are huge and service is beyond friendly. I couldn't finish my plate. The seafood is so fresh too. Thanks for a great experience.

Great breakfast, rode our bikes from our beach rental near Newport pier so GOOD can't wait to try this little gem again and servers really nice and portions were HUGE and they have bike parking. Went on weekday and had fast service I'm sure on weekends it's packed

Pretty decent diner in Newport Beach. I had the Beach Burrito and my wife had the Huevos Rancheros. I was definitely the winner in the game of who had the better meal. Pretty standard diner food and diner quality. They do a good job of bussing and keeping your coffee full. The waitresses are all in tank tops and shorts which seems odd but they're probably grateful for it in the summer. Everyone was nice. A solid place to check out if you're in Newport but I don't think you need to go out of your way for it.

Awesome breakfast joint. This was our first time and so incredibly impressed!! Thought it was gonna be one of those dingy diners but we were oh so wrong. The atmosphere is relaxing, staff is so friendly and accommodating and the food was "off the chain" fantastic! And to top it all off the restrooms were clean, smelled good and they even had mouthwash and lotion. This is going to be our "go to" breakfast joint from now on!!

Services here sucks. It takes forever and a day to take your order. Then it takes another day to get your food and there was barely anyone there. Food was OK, I've had better. I won't come back here.

Love this place. I have been coming here for 15 years and have never had a bad experience. Great food with excellent service. Best omelette selection in Orange County. Have yet to try one I didn't like.

I hate to say anything negative, but I just have to be honest, this is probably the WORST restaurant I've ever been to. My boyfriend and I came here because he lives on the peninsula and it was convenient. There was a 20-30 minute wait on a Sunday and the place was pretty packed, which was expected. We get seated and I order an apple juice without even looking at the menu. My apple juice arrives and it's a weird dark brown color and didn't taste like apple juice, WTH?! I look at the menu and this brown stuff just cost us $5!! update: A "friendly" Yelper named Austin H. from Newport Beach, wrote to me to explain that it's hard pressed Apple Juice which means it's fresh and to get a clue. I've had fresh pressed apple juice before but this one just did not taste right. Sorry for pissing you off Mr. Austin, but I think i might have a clue or two :) I kept it simple and ordered French toast with 2 over easy eggs and sausage. My boyfriend ordered an omelet (forgot which one). My french toast arrives and it looked kinda grey. I know this is hard to believe, but I was shocked too. The over easy eggs were normal, thank God, and the sausage I couldn't even finish eating.... more grossness. Our server brought out the wrong omelet and it was watery. We tried to eat and just left without saying anything to the server, except with the thought of, we will NEVER come back here EVER AGAIN. I was kind of traumatized. If you want better quality, go to Denny's (that's a joke, but I think they do have better quality food, which is sad to say in my opinion). They should definitely change their name to Crappy's!

Great little beach diner! Always busy and really nice people... wonderful beach vibe and very relaxed... The food was good but nothing i'd write home about... It was above average. One of those places that you can confidently get something "good" no matter what you order but nothing will really knock your socks off. I ordered the breakfast quesadilla which was good but messy. they put two tortillas on top of each other and filled the in-between area with toppings and LOTS of green chilies. I wish they would have used one tortilla and folded it to make it easier to handle. the toppings were falling out. Also use less chilies as there were just too many. It was yummy but could be improved. My boyfriend got the machaca breakfast and it was again, good, but not GREAT. I would go back again, its just not an all time favorite....

I came here for brunch with my girlfriend and I was surprised I never heard of this place. This whole in the wall is a great place to get a brunch fix. Ambiance: It was like a hidden Norms or Denny's. It had the feel of a breakfast dinner mixed with a solid family ran beach feel restaurant. It seemed filled with locals. And by filled I mean packed. Service: All the waitresses were dressed in laid back beach type clothing. Meaning a tank and shorts. They were all nice and attentive. Food: The menu may look like a Denny's or IHOP. But it sure did not taste like it. It was way better. We started off with the biscuits and gravy due to the recommendations of other yelpers. I'm not a big biscuit and gravy guy but let me tell you. This was really good. The gravy was a perfect texture and had thick cut bacon in it. Highly highly recommend! My girlfriend got the eggs Florentines. The hollandaise sauce was on point it came with 3 poached eggs and a large serving of hash browns. Large portions and quality food equals a win. I got the chorizo breakfast burrito and it was massive to say the least. I got hash browns in it and it defiantly hit the spot. The eggs, hash browns, chorizo, and salsa tasted great! Overall I definitely recommend this place. It has a large menu that everyone will enjoy with friendly service and even better food.

Manager was really nice and helpful, service from waitresses was a bit off and hard to get a hold off, we has to wait 5 minutes before menus. Breakfast quesadilla was amazing though and great location. Music was loud, but kind of funny. Great place to come with a hangover.

If you're staying at the Newport Channel Inn, Cappy's is just a short walk away. My hubby and I knew we would have breakfast here during our weekend stay at Newport Beach, but we ended up having lunch here too the day before. I'm glad we did. We were seated as soon as we walked in kind of close to the bar. For lunch I had the Turkey/avocado/lettuce/cucumber wrap in a flour tortilla with super hot, fresh fries & small glass of apple juice. There was a slight hint of honey mustard and mayo, but not too much. The portions were fairly large--I couldn't even come close to finishing all of mine. A little while later, my sister-in-law and her boyfriend met up with us. They already had lunch, but both had some Bloody Marys. They said they were pretty good. For breakfast the next day after we combed the beach for a few shells, I ordered the French toast with one piece of sausage and a scrambled egg. I wasn't crazy about the French toast, but I ate all of it. I'm almost certain that the French toast was wheat instead of white which I dislike, so I practically drenched them in syrup. The waitresses were excellent... always making sure we had hot coffee in our cups. The assortment of condiments at our table were greatly appreciated. The music is always playing loud outside, but is not too loud inside. Bathroom was very clean. I loved all the colorful oceanic paintings in and outside of the cafe. The place was packed both times we went there. Lots of parking around back if you can't find a place in front or on the side. Review #141

My favorite place to go after work for a cocktail...at 0730. Yep! That's what night shift people do after a long night or 3 in a row especially. Greyhound or mimosas are particularly good here though I think a bit spendy. Everything at Cappys is exceptional at breakfast time. My two personal faves are the beach burrito and eggs Benedict. Don't get the fruit it will just be a slice of orange. Potatoes all 3 ways they prepare them are yummy. Tip: Hoag employees get a discount just ask for it

This is one of the 'must try' diners in Orange County. The interior layout of Cappy's Cafe is a little funky: paintings of ocean life fit nicely with a kind of ship captain's bar theme. I absolutely love that kind of kitschy, old-fashioned vibe. The food is also excellent: I had a delicious order of eggs benedict with a healthy side of fruit for ten bucks and change. Lastly, the customer service was also strong. The waitresses were very prompt and kept filling my water glass.

Amazing food. We arrived with 9 people and they sat UA down super quick. The waitresses were real pros. The food was excellent, the eggs cooked beautifully, and the hot chocolates at just the right temperature for the kids. I am coming back here for sure.

Cappy's is a friendly, comfortable little cafe that was a convenient place for me to grab breakfast when I was staying in the area. The wait staff couldn't come up with a "signature dish" to recommend, so I just got the California omelette which was "popular". It was good. No better or worse than you'd expect at a roadside diner, although they were pretty generous with the avocado. I made a mistake with the side, though. The home fries were a little disappointing. They were just potato medallions sprinkled with that dried, grated Parmesan cheese that comes in a can. I should have gone with the hashed browns.Overall, not bad, but there are a couple other places in walking distance that do a better job.

For breakfast, Cappy's Cafe is reliable, efficient and tasty, as the menu is vast. The atmosphere is frenetic during the weekend, so don't plan a leisurely meal. Members of the staff bumped into my chair at least a dozen times, although I could not be any more up close and personal with the table without lying on top of it. Nonetheless, I managed to contain my propensity for bellicosity. Had it not been for the delicious French Toast, which is prepared with an egg bread and served with sweet whipped butter and a side of turkey sausage links, I may have not been so virtuous. Furthermore, were it not for my penchant for inherent dignity and poise, I may have exhibited publicly inappropriate moments with that butter. My friends implored me to govern my behavior and practice acceptable conventions. I have a tendency for being outspoken and occasionally uninhibited. Easily the size of a gastrocnemius muscle, the Chorizo Burrito with potatoes, egg, avocado and cheese is a bulging heap of deliciosity. There are enough condiments on the table to quiet the complaints of a finicky diner or to rid oneself of doldrums resulting from sedentary languor. We'll be back.

I really don't get the positive reviews here. I think people have been coming here so long they enjoy Cappy's for nostalgic value. That's the only possible explanation. Cappy's consistently manages to mess up breakfast food... which is difficult. It's really bad people. And to exacerbate things, they make the worst coffee EVER. How can you run a breakfast joint with literally the worst coffee ever. They must try and make it horrible. I was in the Marines for 10 years so I'm used to sh***y coffee, but this is the worst coffee I've ever had. Service isn't the worst, but well below average. Try Eat Chow next door (slightly over priced but much better food and great coffee), or Cucina Allessa just down the road. I even gave it a second chance to see if it was a fluke. Nope, still sucks.

By far, one of my favorite brunch spots. The first time I went I had the French toast which is HANDS DOWN the best French toast I've ever had. I don't typically like breakfast foods, but I'm always in the mood for the French toast or Eggs Benedict at Cappys. The portions are large (which is what I look for in a Sunday brunch) and the Mimosas are wonderful and the bartender is never stingy with the champagne. Not to mention, extremely nice servers. I've recommended Cappys to so many of my friends and try and stop by for brunch every open weekend I have. Definitely an unexpected gem!

Great local Newport Beach breakfast/lunch spot. Food was delicious, quick and hot. Service was top notch!! The restaurant and restrooms were spotless. The owner, David, so warm and friendly, southern hospitality!! I'll be back and soon!! Don't miss Cappy's when you're in Newport, Huntington or OC!!

Ordered a monte cristo and the turkey was DRY. Like OLD dry. Bread was GREY. Never seen anything like it really. Was not a Monte Cristo. Was huge though but I ended up throwing it away. Hubby's omelet was ordered with cheddar and came with American. Bloody mary was a bloody mary. Not good, not bad. Lots of ice and celery. Not a lot of bloody or mary. Service was fast. So fast they kept trying to kick us out of our booth. My cousins stuffed french toast looked good and her husbands eggs florentine looked good too. Wish I had ordered those. Glad my cousin picked up the tab. I would have sent my food back otherwise. Been here before. Might give it one more try, but its a might! Drive past here twice daily but might not stop again. Bummed

Very disappointed! We have been there many times. My husband and I went yesterday for lunch, he got the shrimp taco's. He found many pieces of plastic trash bag cut up in his taco's. We brought this to our servers attention, whom didn't seem to surprised. When she brought our check out to us, they had taken off HALF off his lunch...They discounted our $40 lunch by $4.98.... With no apology from management...REALLY???? The customer service is terrible!!! If, you decide to eat here, look at your food...you may not know what's in it...We will never go back.

My phone just auto-corrected Cappy's to Crappy's, which is totally appropriate. I had hoped that it could be that diamond in the rough but it was pretty much what you would expect from a run down diner. I split the eggs Benedict and the corned beef hash. Corned beef wasn't bad but the Benedict was terrible. Hollandaise was gross and the eggs were way over poached. The bright spot was the sourdough toast. A friend got a side of bacon which was served cold. Coffee was watered down. Service was friendly and attentive but the food was just below average all around.

Iv'e gone here for the past 22 years. I gave two stars for two reasons, they have a full bar which is great for brunch on the weekends and the food is decent for the most part. I wanted a combo like breakfast with pancakes eggs bacon and sausage. They didn't have anything like that. Just a three pancake with eggs for 10 bucks? If I wanted to add a side of bacon and sausage it would have been 9 extra dollars? So basically 20 bucks for just some eggs pancakes, bacon and sausage? I can get all that for 7 or 8 bucks at a few other places. I ended up just getting the pancakes and eggs with a side of bacon which cost a total of $15 bucks. Ridiculously over priced. Especially since the side of bacon was only two little pieces and were totally over cooked and burnt. I thought I would have gotten at lest 3 or 4 pieces of bacon for 5 bucks and it be cooked right. And not sure why but the waitress brought everyone's food out and I had to wait another few minutes for mine while everyone else ate. I went to finally dive in and then noticed I had no silverware. UUUghhh. Can't a chick eat already!! Not gonna go back any more. That was the last time. I would rather go to Sugar Shack in HB. Foods bomb, half the price plus a great view of people watching.

Love this place! Met the new owner at breakfast today, he was very warm and inviting. As usual, our food was brought out quickly, and was hearty and delicious. Great service by the staff, always very attentive to our needs. I highly recommend this place!

This place used to be great...it's no longer the case. Service is nice but the food took a turn for the worse over the past couple of years. Way too overpriced for the quality. Expect a very long wait 30 minutes on weekend mornings. Just beware.

5 stars for 2 big reasons. The staff is super friendly, (especially with me and all of my special healthy food requests and substitutions) and the food is amazing... At least the breakfast is. I haven't had lunch there yet. Very casual, really busy on the weekends, but they work hard to turn over the tables pretty quick. We go more often for breakfast during the week. The veggie skillet is my favorite. :)

This has been my New Year's spot for the last two years...it is very uniques beach bum bar meets American cafe...love the sourdough bread and the omelettes. The mimosas are the bomb too!

Nice aroma of ocean air whirling through the diner. in fact this place could be mistaken for Mel's Diner Waiting for the question, "Where's my grits??? Or hearing the ol' saying, "your a horse's patute" And pop... I was outta my ol' dream.. and smackin down on a good ol' T-bone steak Cooked in Terriyakeeeee Sauce. With crispy poatoes on the outside while soft on inside. The eggs looked lost next to my cow sized steak. Great attentive service... And now.....off I go down P.C.H. ....zoooooom....

Parking is near impossible here on Sunday mornings, so be sure you come here earlier, say, before 9:30 a.m. Although we got here a little after 9:30 a.m., it wasn't long before we were seated. We ordered a vegetarian egg white omelette (loaded with onions, avocados, whole pieces of broccoli & I think there were also bell peppers in it). In addition, we also ordered three pumpkin pancakes, a couple cups of coffee and a mimosa. The mimosa was a no-go. The omlette was really good and came with a couple of sides. We elected hash browns and wheat toast, which was slathered with butter. (Normally, we get our toast dry.) The pumpkin pancakes were SO amazing. There were also pieces of canned pumpkin in it, which were both visible and taste-able. I would definitely frequent this place again.

Ugh, really wanted to like this place but sadly was just gross. I mean it's not that hard to mess up breakfast and even the lunch was sad, we asked the waiter how good the hamburger was and she said "eh not bad"? What the hell is this suppose to mean when someone who works here doesnt seem so sure on the food they serve? My breakfast burrito had salmon in it, YUCK? fish? wow.. never seen anybody do this but it sure was horrible. Also the restaurant is really old and junky looking inside.

Cappy's Cafe: What can I say best place ever. Treat you like family, yes I'm a local so I'm there all the time. Don't want to go anywhere else. If you are looking for a place to feel at home this is it!

I recently came here with my mom for lunch and I wasn't that pleased with our waitress. I asked her a question about what came on this one sandwich I've never had before. She looked at me as if I was stupid and said "what usually comes on a sandwich..tomatoes, mayo, etc." When she brought me the sandwich..it was just meat and lettuce. Everything she rudely said that was supposed to be on the sandwich wasn't. I paid $10 for a piece of meat, bread, and lettuce.

Went there for the first time this morning. Sat on the patio with our dog. I have driven by there many times and there was always a long line to get in, not the case today. We got right in and the food and service was great. We will definitely be back.

I've been coming to this restaurant every year since I was a young boy with my parents coming to CA on vacation. Now I live here and get to come all the time and we still love this place as much as the first day. I've tried A LOT here and never had something I didn't like. They have a huge variety of food choices and the portions are totally shareable, not to mention the full bar and it being on PCH so it's nice that you can walk off your food coma on the beach afterwards. They're only open 6am-3pm though so don't try going for dinner. Cappy's is a must try!

The family and I went here off breakfast and it very overpriced. The food was decent but the bill was $47.00. I got the eggs Benedict and hash browns, my husband got a breakfast burrito, for the kids we ordered one kids breakfast a side of bacon and an a la cart pancake. We ordered 2 coffees a milk and an orange juice for the kids. The drinks were 4$ each. It is just too expensive for breakfast. On a positive note all the waitresses were friendly and the service is great. I am not trying to sound cheap but who likes being overcharged for a very simple breakfast.

Looks like an awesome local joint. Love walking in and seeing local PD having breakfast. You know it's good. The portions are more than generous and a very relaxed atmospher. I had the country fried steak and it was everything you are looking for in a big diner breakfast. Fabulous gravey, crispy exterior and jucy meat. We will be back. Only bummer - though not huge, we were really hoping to over look the ocean. It looks like you are about a block inland, but we were able to get down to it later.

If you come on the weekend expect a wait. But its okay because most of the waitresses are pretty hott so there is plenty to look at while you wait. Short shorts and tank tops as a uniform, yes thank you. Inside has a cheesy 80's beach theme to it...you almost expect Magnum P.I. to come waltzing through the door at any moment. I must say that I like th e assortment of hot sauces and spices that permanently reside in the middle of your table (Tabasco, tapatillo, cholula, spike...the list goes on). Although known for their bloody marys, my cohort says that are "just okay". Although the corned beef hash was handmade and grub the rest of the food was a bit lack luster. Over medium eggs came out watery and over easy. Potatoes that were listed as "deep fried and topped with Parmesan cheese" actually were topped with that KRAFT crap that come in a green can. The eggs Benedict was again described as "just okay". Coffee was a bit thin and weak. Service was very good, there are at least 3 or 4 hostesses that orbit around the restaurant refilling you coffee after every sip. The hot waitresses are the best part about this place..

5 stars because it's everything a breakfast diner should be. Large portions, friendly staff, perfectly greasy-ish food for hungover mornings (and great bloodys), coffee with lots of refills, outdoor seating.. This place gets busy, especially in the summer - worth the wait though. They get you in pretty quick.. And even bring you coffee while you're waiting outside!

Cappy's is great...LOVE this place. Huge portion's, the food is good, and you can bring your doggie and sit on the patio. I usually get the breakfast burrito and the hubs has to help me finish it. The best part about our last trip here was the drunk on the patio who had one too many Bloody Mary's telling the waitress's: "You girls are stunning, stunning, simply stunning...just STUNNING. If they ever make a show called The Real Girls of Cappy's of Orange County, you girls should star in in". He..he...gotta love drunk people at 10:00 in the morning.

You aren't going to get the best meal of your life at cappys but you might just enjoy yourself a little. Its unpretentious breakfast food that fills you up and has all the elements you want out of breakfast. My friend and I came to eat here because there was too much of a wait at eat chow. I looked at the yelp promotion and it was 50% off bar drinks with the purchase of an entree. Sounds pretty good and I was in the drinking mood because it was Sunday and the 49ers were about to shove a hunk of cheese up green bays ass. We finished our meal and since I had a buzz and making your bloody Mary's a double was 2 bucks extra I decided to unlock my offer. Saved us about 20 bucks. Funny thing is that the offer wasn't even valid for Sundays...... We forgot what day it was I guess? They honored it anyway. Pretty sick. service was great having said that. Filled my coffee and made stiff drinks. Almost want to give it 4 stars.

Really hearty breakfast place in Newport before hitting the beach~ 1. Food: "deep fried and topped with Parmesan cheese" . Omelettes are great here! Food isn't as great as other breakfast places Ive been and for the price its a bit high for here. However its still very good I would still recommend giving it a try 2. Decor: All american Beach vibe, with them white folks and family coming here on Sun morning for breakfast/brunch. 3. Price: A little pricer than other breakfast places. I wouldn't come here every week but once in a while on a sat/sun morn its a nice local place to splurge. Compare with Plums its got a more relax beach all american vibe here and your wallet will love you better. 4. Service: They are so friendly here. My waitress was nice and attentive. I had a hair on my plate, she didn't say a word and had the kitchen make a new one right away. We came on Sun morning so be prepared to wait 30 min! Def recommend coming here for those fried potatoes, it is one of a kind that i've never had before! Overall great experience here!

Cappy's has really good breakfast/brunch! My family eats here often. It isn't the cheapest place around, but you get what you pay for and their prices are competitive with other places around. I also went here for breakfast on my 21st birthday last year because I wanted a mimosa with breakfast. They accommodated 10 of us quickly and they have good mimosas! My aunt and uncle enjoyed their bloody marys. The omelettes are delicious!

Excellent food and service!! Full house at 1:30p on a Sunday so plan accordingly. They need to turn up (or on) the AC, it's early august and the ceiling fans are not cutting it, with one door open. Stopped by a grungy jack in the box later that was more comfortable. Very loud inside too so don't expect to carry on a conversation without yelling. Maybe add some sound absorbing tiles or something.

Location is right off PCH in Newport Beach. If busy, parking can be troublesome. However, the portions are generous (you can easily spilt a Caesar wrap) and food is good. Great for breakfast or lunch. Especially if you enjoy Bloody Mary's.

A fun place to have breakfast, brunch and lunch along the coast with a beachy atmosphere. A neighborhood and tourist favorite since 1957. The food was good and the service was excellent. Parking can be a little tough but easy to park bicycles. Very close to many beach destinations.

I guess I don't understand the hype :-/ Food was just OK, the service was chaotic and the seating is sardine-ish (is that a word??). FYI- The bloody mary was small and had an interesting flavor. Maybe they use clam juice in it?

Discovered this place on the last day of our trip to the area. Everything was great and the service was excellent. This will be our first stop for breakfast on the next trip. We stayed at Best Western and the restaurant is walking distance from the hotel. Skip the free breakfast at the hotel and head on over to this place for a great meal. Nice seating outside so you can enjoy the views and the weather.

I stumbled on this place after a surf session and was astonished by the tasty food and great service. I walked in sat down right away at 10am on a Saturday! I live in the Southbay(Redondo Beach) and this steak eggs biscuit gravy is a serious contender with my local breakfast spot. Beverages were filled and plates were taken right away. I was impressed by the staff and had an amazing experience. My buddy and I wanted to get a tshirt to rep this place it was so good. We will definitely be back when surfing nearby OC spots. Thanks so much Cappy's staff!

I had a yummy breakfast here and will definitely go back. Very friendly staff and great service. They have alot of hot sauce at eat table which is awesome, all different brands. The hashbrowns were the best I have had in a long time. Big portions, yummy homestyle foods.

You must eat here for breakfast! This is my favorite place to have breakfast on Sat and Sun anywhere. The staff are super friendly and fast, the food is awesome and the bathrooms are so clean I may ask to eat my breakfast in there. ;)

Went here for brunch and ordered the vegetarian skillet. Ordering a vegetarian dish you hope that it is a little healthier in comparison to the other meals on the menu. However, even though the meal itself was not bad it was heaped with a great amount of cheese!!! Too much cheese!!! Also the service wasn't very welcoming. The location is nothing either, no views or anything. Overall just a diner I would visit if I was in the area and it was in passing and hungry..

Extremely disappointing! Driving down the coast, saw a full parking lot, and decided to check it out. We were greeted immediately and drink orders were taken, but it went downhill quickly from there. Once drinks were dropped off by the busser, we waited, and waited to finally have the waitress come back. I asked for an omelet a la carte, and she said no problem, but it would have been nice to tell me that I was going to get charged the full meal amount up front:/. Worse off was the quality of the meal. Like I said, I had an omelet. It wasn't bad, as long as I wasn't biting into a section that had egg shell. My aunt had pancakes, which were even more disappointing. Not fluffy at all, and one of the pancakes was crunchy! We can only assume (or hope) that the crunch was also egg shell. My cousin had French toast, which was ok, but nothing special. We would have said something, but the waitress never checked to see how the meal was until we were done and over it. At the end, the bill came out to $31.36 for one coffee and our far below par meals. Will never go back here!

First time here and very happy. This is a casual beach type of place but the service is fast, portions are HUGE and the advice is very friendly. Not to mention the food was really good. I came for breakfast and there are a ton of omelette options. Hard to choose but you don't think you can go wrong!!!

This is by far the best breakfast place in Newport Beach! You get all the bang for your buck! Today I had avocado and mushroom omelette with cheese, so good! And their hashbrowns are to die for!!! Oh and the best part of my meal was the bisects and gravy! The gravy has chunks of bacon in it, so good! Their Bloody Mary are the BEST! No joke! I've had my fair share of Bloody Mary and they are by far in my top 5! And it's right across the street from the beach, what could be better than that! But come hungry, they give you so much food for your buck! I always come here, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon!

  • Pat M.

Being from the Diner Mecca, New Jersey this place could compete with any of them. Very large menu, decent size portions and it's right near the beach so it's got an awesome view. Lost a star because the parking lot is really small but the place ad food itself is awesome

  • Jesseca S.

The fact that my fav place in town registers on the Yelp barometer with less than five stars is a fucking travesty, people. SPECTACULAR wait staff. Great food. And the full bar opens at 6 a.m. What more could you possibly want outta life?! PS: The biscuits and gravy as well as Cappy's pancakes are the best in the world . . . PPS: Bloody Marys rock, too! (Order a double--great value.)

The food was good and the service here is great! This place has a very comfortable laid back feel; the kind of atmosphere perfect for a weekend brunch. To quantify this, they make refilling your water pleasantly awkward. Which was as weird as it sounds. I had an omelette and a bloody mary. Both were above average and I left happy. I just might stumble in here every weekend.

  • D J.

I've been meaning to come here for years, and I finally found time to make that happen today. Since I went on a week day, there was no wait, we found a parking spot, and were seated right away. On the weekends, there's a line that wraps around the place and quite a wait, so be prepared. I ordered one of their veggie omelets. The portion was HUGE and the food was delicious. My mother-in-law ordered pancakes, and was given a very generous portion as well. They have a ton of great items on their menu. I would absolutely recommend this place for breakfast or lunch. Their quaint wrap around bar looks like a great place to grab a mimosa. WARNING: Go EARLY if you are going on the weekend. The place gets packed!

  • Glenn F.

My breakfast was pretty good. 20oz Porterhouse(MR), eggs, hashbrowns crispy, and biscuits and gravy. Everything was cooked properly and presented well. The decor was nice and modern with flat screens. Nicer than I expected for a stand alone, beach area spot. Bar area is small and in plain view of 1/2 of the dining room.

  • Cory J.

A greasy spoon with some amazing corned beef hash. Only open for breakfast and lunch. The portions are huge but the service is just OK (the fit waitresses don't seem to think they need to earn their tips). Prices are reasonable. A bit of clogged sink whiff coming from the kitchen on my last visit, yuck. Still, I will return for the corned beef.

    (3)
  • Kevin H.

Had breakfast here twice recently, servers were attentive and nice both times. Servings are large. The corned beef hash is made on the premises and it's good. Second time here I had pancakes, bacon & eggs and I will say that their bacon tasted funny, i.e., it had sort of a "band aid" taste. Other than that, I feel like this is a decent place for breakfast.

My husband and I have been riding our road bikes past Cappy'sCafe in Newport and always noticed people out front and waiting in line. We take lines outside of dining establishments as usually a good sign for good food and yelp reviews looked good. I had just picked my husband up at John Wayne airport and we decided to try a meal. We could have ordered breakfast or lunch, we went with a lunch order. Atmosphere: The place was full and loud with conversations. We sat at a small table for two not far from the bar. It's kinda worn looking, on the inside. Interior could use an update. Dark paneling, large wall mirrors, dark carpeting. There is seating outside. Service: Quick, prompt and friendly. Someone is always walking around asking if you'd like a coffee or water refill. We didn't order any drinks, but their bar looked well stocked. Menu: The usual breakfast items, sandwiches and hamburgers, weekday specials Pricing: Reasonable. We walked in and were seated promptly, no waiting. My husband ordered the tuna wrap. What did he think...tuna was a bit dry and too many cucumbers inside for his taste. It came with criss-cut fries, which he polished off. I had a patty melt with fruit. I LOVE patty melts. Unfortunately, this one did not match up to others I've had. The patty was not fresh (frozen), and my onions weren't completely grilled, plus the bread was only slightly toasted. It seemed as though they hurriedly cooked mine, not giving the onions enough time to soften or my bread to toast, fortunately my burger was cooked through. I had coffee, which was good and they had an assortment of coffee creamers:) Our waters were never empty. We're not knocking it off the list, yet. Every place gets a second chance, We're going to try breakfast, next time. Besides, the place was packed, they must be doing something right.

Went here this morning following a late night. Arrived at 9:30 and was promptly seated. This is a true breakfast joint with an interesting mix of patrons. Service was prompt and accurate and food quality and quantity was excellent. I had eggs with a ham steak. The grilled ham steak was thick, covered half the plate and still hung over the sides. It must have been at least 10-13 ounces. Nothing fancy just good food at reasonable prices. The full bar bloody Mary's were spicy and good. Coffee fresh and hot.

I have eaten at Cappy's on a number of occasions. Their plates of food are large and you get your money's worth. I just don't think they spice their food enough for my liking. This last time I went with my wife, she got an omelet and I got a chicken wrap. The wrap was good but her omelet just tasted like the spinach, mushrooms and other ingredients. They tasted good but if there was a bit of salt and or pepper I think this plate would have been better. When I am in SoCal and looking for breakfast I will probably end up back here but I think a little salt would go a long way.

I was told that local celebrities hang out here, although I didn't see anybody even remotely famous during my breakfast. This is a good ol' fashioned beach city diner, ala Norms and the like that used to populate the landscape everywhere. The prices are definitely updated but this is not expensive. Great menu that has a little bit of everything.

  • Arden B.

I definitely ordered wrong here. I got the breakfast burrito and it was awful. Everything inside kind of melted into one soggy mess and absolutely none of the ingredients were tasty on their own. Not even dousing the thing in hot sauce could salvage it. It's kind of a dive. It feels kind of out dated and there's really nothing appealing about the inside. We were a group of three at a corner booth and it felt strangely cramped. The waitress also was in a bad mood and made that clear from the very first moment she came to take our order. I left disappointed that I had spent that much on such a sub-par meal. I see where there was potential for charm here, but it fell flat.

Cappy's Cafe Definitely avoid the summer rush and go early if it is summer time. What to order. eggs, potatoes, and bacon with the "sourdough toast" did I mention the "sourdough toast". You might want to get the toast. Maybe just the toast and butter. Oh and they have waffles... Not many places have waffles.

I came here because all of my roomates, Max Lewis and Casey Isaac, wanted to come here. Upon arrival, it seemed like a combination of Hooters and Dennys. I dont think I saw one guy working there. In addition, some of them were quite attractive as well. Before coming, I had always seen this location, but never had the time or opportunity to stop by. The menu looked wonderful, with lots to choose from. Obviously this is the better go to spot instead of your typical Dennys, Norms, or IHOP. I got the breakfast quesadilla, it was recommended from my friends. It came with a side of potatoes and it was about $10. The food was guud, and it was def. a great sit down spot, but the quesadilla COULD be better. Now dont get me wrong...I had a guud time, but since my stomache was growing, it was expecting better (especially from all the hype that my friends were building up about it. Well recommended, will def. come back here again. UNTIL THEN!! ^-^

Thank you Yelp for this great find. My bf and I wanted a breakfast place before we hit the road. The service was outstanding. Our coffee cups never even got half empty. (one of my pet peeves having to keep asking for a refill on my coffee). I had the vegetarian scramble that was excellent. Huge portion. My bF had the deli omelette which he thoroughly enjoyed. Menu is very large and has something for everyone. Highly recommend !!

It was brekie time and I still needed something to fill my liquor-filled belly from the previous night dancing and drinking escapade. The place must be popular since there were many people waiting for a table inside and outside and the tiny, cramped lot that they have was full. Once seated we placed our orders and the bf and I decided to get the nachos rancheros to share. I don't know why we ordered nachos at 10 AM, but afterwards I did not feel very well and was craving something fresh and healthy. That's not to say that the nachos were bad...they were actually quite tasty. The tortilla chips were not your standard, cardboard-like corn tortilla chips. These might have been corn but they were light and very crispy. There were two dollops of guacamole and sour cream and then drizzled all over the chips was cheddar cheese and some type of ranchero sauce. The plate cost about $8 so that's a steal if you're splitting it with some other people. Just make sure you really want nachos...I really wanted fruit or salad but I ended up ordering nachos. Hmmm, how did that happen?

Always good! We have our morning meetings there.. The service is a little slow SOMETIMES, but nevertheless what do you expect from a bar/breakfast spot.. Good for a strong hangover lol.. :)

Eating breakfast overlooking the beach while people watching....what can a girl ask for? Yep, Cappy's Cafe sits along PCH and is definitely a place for pure entertainment and some decent breakfast right before a day of adventure and fun with the bf. Been here twice already and I liked their feta spinach omelet. I went back the second time and had the crab omelet, which wasn't that great because it had a weird aftertaste and it was very dry. Service isn't that bad, however one server that took our order took forever to get to us and didn't seem as if she wanted to be there and for some reason another server that took over, who we had on a previous visit, is by far my favorite. It never fails...I know wherever you go and grab morning breakfast, you expect to see people walking into the restaurant in slow-mo with crusty eyes and bed head....pretty funny. This time I wish it was just that, and it happened to be two girls that obviously partied the night before. They had just walked in and one of them knew Cappy, and he had them sit a couple feet away from us, which was outside on the deck. The one thing that annoyed me about them, as soon as they were seated, they lit their cigarettes. I know smoking is not completely prohibited everywhere, but c'mon, it should when you have most of the people around eating and not smoking whatsoever. Totally one of my biggest pet peeves and very inconsiderate. Being that I used to be a smoker, I at least had the decency to wait after I ate and smoked away from people. Usually I would say something, but we were already done with breakfast and we were waiting to get our card back. Giving Cappy's 3 stars due to the inconsistency of his food and service, plus the smoking. I give chances, so I hopefully 3rd time is a charm.

Cappy's Cafe checks a few boxes when looking for the ideal breakfast and lunch restaurant. The environment is cool, and home to the locals of Newport Beach. However, the food is sub par and over priced for the quality. The breakfast burritos are massive, but the content inside is rarely ever cooked efficiently. Too much food that is not cooked isn't acceptable. On the positive side the waitresses are efficient and personable along with energetic and fun, all a part of the image Cappy's Cafe serves to represent.

Waitresses in tanks, tennys, shorts and 80s music on the stereo....AWESOMENESS! This place was really HUGE on the portions and the service was great too. Just giving them 3 stars because their hours SUCK. Open from 6am to 3pm just isn't fair - it's a small parking lot too but the food is worth it!

I ordered the Lox & Eggs and I loved my brunchfest! This little PCH nook is a great breakfast spot when you need a plate full of subsistence & good greasy breakfast carbs! The menu looked really superb and diversified for I had quite a few choices to eliminate before I made the right one... Lox & Eggs, country potatoes & sourdough toast with a chilled ice tea!

It was okay. I went here with my father and some of his friends because it is there Saturday morning tradition in Newport. The service and staff were friendly, but the food was just okay. I ordered the avocado, mushroom and bacon omelet. There was plenty of avocado, but it lacked the other ingredients. The hash browns were just fair.

My husband took me to breakfast here last weekend. He use to go here ALL the time back....hmmmm YEARS ago! They've been around a long time. Anyhoo... great food! Buscuits and gravy were awesome, and just good ol' comfort food if you ask me! It was really busy, but we were still seated (first available) within 10 minutes. I would have given 4 stars, but the table wasn't washed good and trash was left on it and we were still seated. The rag they used to clean the table was smelly.... not a great way to start the meal. Other than that, food, atmosphere, and the staff were great!! I'll go back!

I ate here for the first time in years today and left extremely satisfied. The food tasted great and the portions were more than enough. The waitresses were really nice and the food came out just a few minutes after we had ordered. The burgers and sandwiches appear to bigger than your average restaurant along with the quality. I haven't tried the breakfast yet so I can't comment on that but from what I hear, the breakfast is possibly their specialty. I love the nautical theme, it fits well with the geographical location of the restaurant. I don't agree with some of the negative comments I have read about this place because I had such a great experience. If you have one bad experience, you shouldn't assume that the restaurant has terrible staff and poor service. I WILL be coming back soon to find out for myself what the breakfast is all about at this place.

I heart Cappy's! I've been going to that place for as long as I can remember and its always for one thing, and one thing only. Breakfast. Service is always quick, efficient and polite and I love that I can customize my order to add or subtract anything I want and they say those magic words, "No problem" I know, I'm a creature of habit, I usually either get the veggie scramble with eggs, cheese, mushrooms and broccoli or the breakfast burrito. Prices are good, wait time isn't bad if you come early and the restaurant is clean! How can you beat that on a weekend?

Very good. Had the omelette w beef chunks and guac/sour cream. Wife had the corned beef. Gotta tell ya, this is only one of two places that serve legit corned beef/hash. Homemade and tasty. Service was fast, always a full cup of coffee. Only weird thing...when we first got there, they just pointed at the table where they wanted us to sit. Maybe a lil busy? Idk but rest of service all good. They even asked what I thought of their corned beef. I told em! $32 for two w a bloody Mary and coffee.

I like coming for brunch/breakfast after a good surf session. I always end up here after catching some waves over at Bolsa and the food always seems to hit the spot. I generally get their omelets or the waffles. There can be a wait here on the weekends, but not too bad. I'm surprised that this place has not gotten the best of reviews, but I always come here super hungry, so really I like this place!

I am quite shocked that Cappy's doesn't have a solid 5 star rating!! The food is always awesome and the service is great. The turn lane and parking can be a hassle but usually worth it. Their homefries are awesome and by boyfriend LOVES the #25 egg white omelet with ortega chilies and feta cheese. I usually get the ham and cheddar cheese. They also make a pretty tasty sandwich, I love the half sandwich and bowl of soup deal perfect combo always.

FROM VERY GOOD TO DOWNRIGHT DISGUSTING!! This morning I made probably my third visit to Crappy's. First time I went for lunch and ordered the steak sandwich. It was horrible; so full of gristle that I could barely cut it with my steak knife. Natch I sent it back. I replaced with a Ruben sandwich, which was one of the best, if not THE best Reuben I've ever eaten. Stuffed with meat, nice kraut, break perfectly grilled. Outstanding. Another time I went for breakfast and ordered chicken fried steak and eggs and it was ok. Today I went for breakfast and ordered pancakes, sausage and eggs. The minute I saw the pancakes, I knew I would hate them, and sure enough I did. They seemed exactly like the ones made with Bisquick (If I wanted those, I could have stayed home and saved $12 bucks). They were dry, gummy, sour tasting, too bready, just plan horrible. The sausage was this minuscule patty, thoroughly overcooked that I would have probably had to use a knife to cut it. The eggs were perfectly cooked over easy (and I am very picky about how my eggs are cooked. I sent back the pancakes (the waitress gave me no attitude and was very professional and asked if I would like something else). These were replaced by the eggs Benedict. Eggs were poached a little more than I would have liked, but that was my fault for not specifying exactly how I wanted them cooked. The sauce was obviously made from a mix, but not bad. Canadian bacon was ample, and hash browns were good. The coffee was weak and not all that good. I've read reviews about how the waitresses are unfriendly, but I have never had that to be the case. They're always been friendly, quick and efficient. So out of three visits, two of them had to be returned. I probably will not go back unless I specifically want a Reuben Sandwich. It's not worth it, especially for the high prices they charge!

One word for Cappy's: breakfast. And also the best biscuits and gravy I have had. Bacon gravy that is! Cappy's is an unpretentious place in the middle of pretentious Newport Beach. I have always had good service there, even when it's packed (as it usually is on the weekends). It doesn't have fancy anything - coffee, french toast, pancakes, or bennedicts - but it's reasonable, and what they have is simple and does taste good. Plus, again, the biscuits and gravy are to die for! Whenever I am in town, Cappy's is a sure breakfast spot to hang out with my friends and have a fun morning.

Terrible! It was four of us eating and three of our meals were simply terrible. I ordered the sausage skillet. The "sausage" tasted like chopped up hotdogs and the potatoes were unseasoned and burnt. I requested some salsa, but that was flavorless. I had about five bites and couldn't eat it any longer. I ended up just eating my toast and being four months pregnant this was not enough. My husband ordered the Monte Cristo and received a giant plate with what looked like three Monte Cristo sandwiches, a pickle, and he ordered the fruit with it. He ate almost one of the sandwiches and couldn't stomach it anymore. I tried the pickle and it tasted cheap and terrible. My mother-in-laws Mexican omelette also fell very short. She opened it up and the vege's were grossly wrapped in the middle of the cooked eggs and the potatoes were burnt; she also only ate about 1/3 of her meal. My father-in-law had the pancakes and he said they tasted fine. The only reason why I gave them two stars is because the waitress removed the majority of the cost of the sandwich (he ate 1/3 of it and so was only charged that much). I ate my husbands fruit bowl and the cantaloupe was not ripe. We were referred by the front desk hotel staff and will next time check on yelp. My suggestion is this place reduce its portion size and work on quality. Simply disgusting. Oh, and the waitresses stopped by every two minutes to see if we wanted water or coffee. It was overkill and it felt like they were interrupting more than being helpful.

My boyfriend and I really like coming to this place -- nice mimosas and bloody mary's. Food is pretty good, maybe a little over-priced, but it is on PCH in Newport Beach. The portions are large, and whatever kind of omlette you order, it has a ton of the item in it, almost too much (crab, bacon, etc.) It is hard to complain about getting too much crab though! Corned beef hash is excellent. My kids really like the place too. And walking distance from Newport Shores, so we can have a couple drinks and not worry about driving -- thus the small parking lot doesn't bother me. There is lots of bike parking too. The service has been hit and miss. Most of the time it is good, but when it's not, it's pretty bad. for example, we waited at least a half hour for a table. There really is nowhere to wait inside, so we waited outside with two impatient kids in the parking lot. From the time they called our name until the 2 minutes it took us to walk inside, they had given our table to someone else! Another time, it seemed we were bothering the waitress to even be there, God-forbid we ask for something... more coffee? butter for the pancakes? nope, asked twice but never got it. But other times, the majority I admit, we have had excellent attentive service and good food. The hours it keeps are kind of strange (6am-3pm). With the full bar and the rockin' music, it seems Cappy's isn't sure if they want to be a breakfast place or a bar. I've been there probably 6 times in the past 3 months, and 4 of 6 visits were great. Definitely beats the heck out of Denny's and Norm's but not quite Harbor House Cafe. And the two bad experiences were so bad (and no apologies as mentioned in other reviews), that I can't give it more than 3 stars.

Omg biscuits and gravy ? The biscuit may have been good but who can tell with that nasty gloppy "gravy'. Disgusting. The hash browns were not cooked on the same day they were served to me. the eggs were cooked nicely and the cut fruit was delicious. It's a cavernous place that I wouldn't recommend. Norms blows this place away !

We are from Portland and the front desk person at our hotel recommended Cappy's for breakfast. The huevos rancheros I ordered were delicious, the omelets were fabulous and the atmosphere was perfect and laid back. Service was quick, staff was friendly and accommodating. I would definitely visit Cappy's again but there is room for improvement. The bloody mary's were not the greatest and the biscuits and gravy my friend ordered were uninspired.

Ok, I feel slightly disloyal writing this since I've been coming here for years. I mean this place is a local institution, right? Well, the deafening noise level on Sunday was just the beginning of a less than pleasant experience. Followed by a weak-ass bloody Mary, a gelatinous mass of the world's WORST hollandaise sauce on my eggs Benedict, huge, tough chunks of inedible bacon in the California omelet and thoroughly disappointing under cooked French toast for my mother. Note to self, only come here during the week and only order scrambled eggs and toast.

I wouldn't go as far as renaming it Crappy's Cafe but it was fairly mediocre. I went on a Sunday morning with the gf and the place was packed. Usually when a place is packed it's safe to assume the food is good. Oh boy, was I wrong. The got the California Omelet with the breakfast potatoes. The omelet was nothing to write home about and the potatoes were stone cold! In addition, the coffee was very watered-down although they were really good about keeping your cup filled. I would give Cappy's another chance if their prices were a little lower. I would much rather go to another cafe for a better breakfast at the same price. Sorry Cappy.

Yum, Cappy's! I've been going to Cappy's for years and I really enjoy it there. Most of the staff is friendly and they keep my coffee cup full. My favorite item on their menu is their sour-dough toast. Just plain sour-dough thats served with your breakfast. Its thick and soooo good. I love it! They have really good Bloody Marys and Mimosas. All their breakfast items are amazing. I do have my favorites though: They have a really great omelette with feta cheese, grilled onions and spinach (I think its called the 62nd street, but I may be wrong) Their french toast is really good. I also like their Monte Cristo--which is huge! Oh, and they have mouthwash in the ladies room, and fresh breath is always a plus.

This place has been here forever and is a local spot with a beach vibe. If you come here, come hungry because the portions are HUGE! Like seriously, even a human garbage disposal (someone who can devour anything and everything) could not finish a plate from here by themselves if they tried! There is usually a crowd waiting outside to be seated on any given weekend, but they're quick to serve you. I've never waited more than 20 minutes even with other parties ahead of me. I've only been here for breakfast but everything I've had has been excellent. They have a lot of different omeletes, egg dishes, breakfast meats, pancakes, waffles, and other typical breakfast diner food. They also have a lunch menu even though they close around 3 pm. Service is good: quick, and friendly. I don't see how you couldn't enjoy yourself at Cappys! Trust me when I say this....you better be ready to eat when you come here! ;)

Been coming here for 15 years. Food quality has always been great. Cute waitresses and good service. Used to have some serious lookers, but times change I guess. Great hangover cure on a sunday morning. couple bloody marys and a breakfast burrito to make you feel like new.

DON'T FALL FOR THE HYPE,WORST BREAKFAST OF MY LIFE. As you can see this place had great reviews plus there was a wait outside, usually a good sign right? WRONG! Now down to the details I had the Omelette Especial - Cheese, Guacamole, Rancheros Sauce and Sour Cream the omelette was extremely greasy, the eggs were runny under cooked with no flavor and there was tons of hard pieces of bacon in it (not included in the description). I opted for the home fries which weren't any thing special but not bad as well as the biscuits and gravy again they were ok but I've definitely had better (this was my first time with BACON gravy and not sausage which is what I think ruined it the most). Hubby had the burrito which was quickly thrown together in layers and made him actually feel sick after a few bites, my sister in law had the corn beef hash she said it was awful. Finally, the best meal that was actually eaten all the way my nephew had the grill cheese with fries. To top it all off the service was so so we received a Sprite with only carbonation, they finally brought a new drink at the end of the meal and our waters never got refilled even though we asked 3 times for them to be.

Was here for breakfast. Sat right down, no waiting. Food was average. Had the 1/2 serving of oatmeal, again it was just ok, Quaker oats that had been cooked 3 hours earlier. My daughter had the kids pancakes and egg and she said the pancakes were good and certainly fluffy. Not worth driving out of the way for but certainly average.

I liked this place, unassuming and get what you pay for. Staff is excellent, and food is good. Not sure about lunch, but breakfast was old school, big plates and hearty. Parking is a challenge on a busy morning, and so is the wait. But, yep, would absolutely go back. As a side bar, as busy as the staff was, one of the assistants took the time to take our photos and explain the editing process on my iPhone. Very cool.

I should have known... Been to this places ages ago and liked it enough. My parents went last month and their service and food were so bad the manager gave them a free breakfast gift cert, which they gave to me. Thanks? Slow service, no refills, wrong order... twice. Food was mediocre and drab. Nothing you can't get for half the price at Dennys. I was a good little customer and showed my gift cert to the waitress as soon as we were seated. At check time the manager comes and tells us he "took care of the food for us." Um no, I gave you a gift cert. He charged us for our orange juice, 2 adults and a baby, $18 freaking dollars!? They charged full price on each of the 1 refill each my hubby and I wrestled from our server. Unbefreakingleavable! Cappys? More like Crappys... I left with a greasy stomach and a chip on my shoulder...

Cappy's has been the favorite breakfast spot for many years! This is truly one of the California Coast's "real deal" locations. The omletes and fried potatoes, fresh OJ and waitress service is something everyone should experience. My hat is off to these great people for serving up the best consistently for years. I can't wait to go back.

I've been frequenting Cappy's for years and love their bloody marys, but something about the place has changed-- maybe the owner? Not sure, but last weekend I ordered a Mexican breakfast and the tortillas came in a completely melted plastic container. I realized the entire thing was now carcinogenic and toxic. When I showed the owner the melted lid of the container he just tossed it into the trash and merely stated, "I didn't know that could be toxic." WOW...

I guess you can say that I am somewhat of a local at Cappy's Cafe. My buddies and I usually go a couple times a week and have a very consistent experience every time. This place seems like a de facto breakfast spot for the locals and OCers after a night of clubbing. I've tried their monte cristo sandwich and meat skillet which were both average in comparison to their price. I think they could (read: should) lower their price a dollar or two for that level of quality and presentation. Their bloody mary is on the smaller side as well, served in a tumbler style glass with just a stalk of celery. Service is attentive though and the waitresses are quick. But I honestly have to say that I've seen better french toast at IHOP.

So to make a long story short went here got eyed out by the locals lol my friend ordered a California omelet and got a omelet stuffed with a crap load of bacon. Than to make things a bit worst we told the waitress and she took his plate only to come back in 5 min with the omelet egg part ontop of a little mound of stuff under it. It looked really gross. I mean like it's like they unfolded the omelet than put some stuff on the plate put a shot of sour cream and guac and than re covered the mound with the egg part of the omelet and threw tons of cheese with greasy bubbles on top. hahahah Damn lucky for me my food was so-so. But man my friends order was fucccckkeed up. lol They didn't even put potatos on his plate after she took the order and "remade" it. Than she forgot to get him his side of oranges... It was like one after another and she didn't say sorry or nothin. I think my friend didn't even tip her. I did but not much. She wasn't a bitch but the lack of observation on the waitresses part and quality of the food made denny's look much better. And I hate hate hate dennys Anyways. The girls were kinda cute too... like a hooters for breakfast sorta? lol

A friend and I came here one time when we were slightly desperate to find breakfast in Newport that wasn't a chain. Kind of a mistake, since I regretted not hitting up an iHop the second I left this place. This place has a unique combination that doesn't really make sense to me. Conveniently located next to PCH, bad food, horrible service, weird setup, bland menu. I mean, I was still in OC right? The food was mediocre and lame, basically anything I can find in a mom n pop shop. There was really nothing special (also they don't serve cafe americano...and didn't know what it was. Big Hint: when it starts with cafe...most likely coffee). The service was uneducated, uninspired, slightly stupid, and unfriendly. FYI, that was me being nice. The walls are painted with this...child like oceanic crack dream which seems cute at first, but when you combine it with the fact that everything else here sucks, just...no. NONONO. Parking here sucks as well. I just do not recommend this place at all. It's appropriate that me and my friend call this place "Crappy's Cafe"...although I could've thought of something original. I'm sure half of Newport calls it Crappy's =P

I was visiting a good friend in Newport Beach and we decided to go to Cappy's for brunch after she raved about how delicious the breakfast was. Since it was around 2, I opted for the lunch menu instead... and regretted it almost immediately. I ordered the tostada salad. Pretty hard to mess up, right? Wrong. It was pretty bland and had very little flavor. Not really sure what they could have done better. Maybe spruce it up with better salsa? Better beans? More cheese? Guacamole/sour cream? Who knows? My friend ordered the french toast, which she had been raving about. In all fairness, the french toast was quite good! I eagerly accepted her offer for a taste... and then continued to greedily accept all subsequent offers. Poor girl - this little piggy probably devoured 1/2 her order. Moral of the story: Order off the breakfast menu and avoid the tostada salad unless you're not much of a flavor person.

Went to Cappy's for the 3rd time this morning. I have to say if it was my first time there I would never have gone back. There were 6 of us and not a single one of us enjoyed our meal. I had the corned beef hash which I have ordered before and it was so full of black pepper that I couldn't eat it. I mentioned it to the manager and he said he would check it out but never came back to comment or even give me the courtesy of acknowledging my complaint. My eggs were ordered over medium but came out with runny whites and I had to send them back. My wife ordered an omelette that had bacon in it that could break her teeth. The kids ordered pancakes and they were way to thick and burnt on the outside. Our friends who we brought there from out of town for a great breakfast were also disappointed. I would have considered giving them another chance if the manager had acted like he cared one bit about my complaints.. We all left there thinking they should add an "R" in their name.

Been here 2 times now. The first was for breakfast. They have a ton of creative omelette combinations so I picked one. Came out good and hot with alot of potatoes. Service was quick and friendly. 3 stars. Second time was for dinner on Wednesday. I thought if they only do it one night a week it must be really special? Wrong. By the time they were finished with me I was totally annoyed. The food was nothing special. The service was so bad. My server was just clueless, couldn't keep the drinks full, seemed bugged the we were even there. She even said a couple of times "I'm just so out of it tonight". But, making no apologies about it to us, rude. 1 star But, the worst. The server at the table behind me. Going on and on and on with the regular customers she had. It wasn't very deep subject matter either. Just her and them trying to make their lives sound interesting to everyone else in the room. I turned around twice to give her the stink eye but, nothing. I'm not hyper-sensitive to these sorts of things. It just went on for too long, too loud. 1 star I would give it another go for breakfast but not for dinner.

Why I love Cappy's: 1. Go out the night before and order shots, mixed drinks, and beer. 2. When with a certain group of people, late night Jack in the Box or Ham & Cheese croissant run, more drinking. 3. Dancing in a friends living room. 4. Roll out of bed the next day. 5. Throw on a casual sun dress or some jeans and a hoodie, and flip flops. 6. Roll into Cappy's at a decent hour. 7. Order a bloody and yummy breakfast with 100 other people who did the same thing.

I have been to this place only a handful of times, but I have enjoyed the service and food everytime. Their pancakes are tasty, and I always get their breakfast special. After drinking a wee bit too much last night but still making it to Sprinkles before the craziness, my good friend from Arizona and I decided to stop at Cappy's for breakfast on our way back to Long Beach. When we walked in there was no one else waiting for a table. By the time we got seated at our table out on the small patio, the lobby was full of people waiting. (I have an amazing knack for showing up to restaurants just before the rush.) There were lots of folks still dressed in the pj's or work out gear. This place definitely seemed to cater to the Newport/Huntington Beach crowd who just rolled out of bed. They brought us two cups of coffee right away along with our menus. The coffee wasn't great, but someone came around with a refill every three sips or so. I got the spinach and cheddar omelette. It was good, but there was a ton of spinach in it. I could only eat about half. The bathroom was clean, though the stall door didn't latch, so my friend and I had to do a tag team to watch the door for each other. The strangest thing, I thought, was that they have mouth wash in the bathroom. Nice, but strange. Overall it was a pretty good experience and I'll definitely be putting Cappy's on my list of places to bring out-of-towners in the future.

I love Cappy's! I come here for either the cheeseburger or the gigantic taco salad. I never have to wait to be seated and the service is great!

Just had breakfast here this morning and was pleased with both the service and the food. parking area is small and it is rather loud inside but what do you expect on a busy Sunday morning. This isn't haute cuisine...just good food with quick service. We will definitely come back!

Cappy's Cafe is like an old friend you haven't seen in awhile.....and I mean that in a good way. Whoever hires the waitresses, bravo. For you single guys, I say "happy hunting' at a place like this. And for a married guy like myself, well, let's just say that it's always nice to have an attractive waitress, you know? Like I said, not sure who does the hiring, but thumbs up from me, at least based on the last time I was here (6 months ago? Has it really been that long? Note to self: go to Cappy's soon!). The food is only OK, which is why I held back a few stars, but this place has a cool vibe, the service is always fast and friendly, and with the aforementioned cute, friendly girls waiting on you, what's not to like, exactly? As an added bonus, a few former pro athletes have been known to have breakfast here....I won't blow their cover, but you would know them. This place is very mellow, has a nice energy, and is easy to find, on PCH. I have never had anything but breakfast here, but they do serve lunch and I think they even serve dinner on Wednesday nights? Trust but verify. Great place to nurse a hangover. There is a tiny little bar on the left hand side of the restaurant as you enter. Cappy's is a great hang. Check it out when you can!

Meh somes up Cappy's for me. I've been there 3 times and all I can say is mediocre. The food isn't too bad, and the prices are ok but really that's all there is to say. Interesting atmosphere (I say that not in a good way). The service was actually pretty good. Felt like an old-town trucker stop. All aside, I keep going back.. (one because of convenience to my location and two because it's not that bad.) I only rated it 2 stars because I want it to be so much better. They have weird hours too. Always open for breakfast on the weekends but I believe they are closed for dinner and lunches on certain dates so call ahead... big fat Meh for this one.

This place is pretty awesome. Went on a couple different weekends and they seat you pretty quickly. When you end up with a wait they bring out muffins to keep you busy while you are out in the sun. Good atmosphere, although generally best to sit outside as the place can get crowded and there is a little more space out there. Eggs benedict is worth ordering - not the best I've had but still better than most. You can get it with a side of biscuits and gravy and have a nice healthy meal. And the nice thing is that the biscuits and gravy is a regular side item. There are many different options on the menu and if you want you can eat healthier as well. Or you can opt for the unhealthy and get a drink or two while you are there. Overall a solid breakfast spot.

Enormous portions and reasonably priced considering how much food you get. Delicious bloody marys as well. I had the monte cristo and could barely finish it. Must try if you're in Newport.

This place was great place for breakfast. The portions were large and the food very tasty. Eggs Benedict was very good as was the ham, bacon, and sausage omelet. Recommend ordering the seasoned potatoes.

Cappy's is a great breakfast spot for locals. I heard the line to be seated gets long on the weekend's but that has never happened when I've been here. The seating and service is always fast. My BF and I always get the Egg's Bendict, very good. Great price $$ for the portions, quality and service.

The waitress was almost too perky. It made me suspicious. Was I supposed to return the favor? I wonder if she knew I slept in the clothes I arrived in? I came in for breakfast and when I'm tired and hungry I owe no one a witty quip or gratuitous laugh. Still, a friendly waitress earns you an extra star in my book. The decor comes with that 1980's hue of aqua that my Barbie ice cream shop came in (sans pink) (-1 star). The painted murals were interesting and there's Scope provided for you in the bathrooms. Awesome (+ 1 star). The food was good. I had the vegetarian skillet and it was all yums (+ 1 star) except for the overload on potatoes. I always do the mental math for the number of potatoes in a meal and mine must've had at least 4 (- 1 star). Ok maybe 3 (+1 stars). Still....way too many potatoes, but the avocado was good and so was the cheese and broccoli. I'd certainly go back again (+1). (1+1+1+1+1) - 1- 1= 3 stars

I have great memories of eating at Cappy's in the 1990s, and the place is still exactly as I remembered it. For food alone, Cappy's would only get 3 stars. The food is average. But the portions are large, the booths are comfortable, the views from the window are good, the location is awesome, there's a parking lot, and all the waitresses are gorgeous and friendly. They serve alcohol starting at 6AM but I rarely see anyone sitting at the bar or drinking, this place is all about breakfast food. Definitely worth a visit for a comfortable meal.

I ordered a medium rare burger here once. It was so over-cooked & rubbery it was literally not even food any more. I'm not exaggerating a single bit. I was polite but employees told me that nobody there could do anything about it & that I would have to come back another day when their "manager" was in. NEGATIVE STARS on this utterly insulting waste of time, money & alleged food materials!

I don't know if this is exactly a destination restaurant. But if, say, we'd had a long day at the beach and were starving and looking for a simple, no-frills meal, we'd be back. We mostly went because of the name. Cappy's. We kind of expected a dim joint serving chowder to sailors and a perfect place to go on a cold, rainy day. It's totally not like that at all! I had one of their wraps (with chicken and avocado), and it was pretty good. My boyfriend had a ham skillet, which he thought was decent. Cappy's is just that -- simple, nothing out of this world or worth going out of your way for, but it gets the job done.

Just had Cappys for the first time and loved it. Will definitely be back. Bacon and eggs for me, one of their many omelettes for the hubby. Their biscuits and gravy are awesome. All they play is 80's music which I love! Didn't have a chance to get the Bloody Mary this time. Will definitely get one next time. Oh and all of the staff are very friendly. Oh and a celebrity sighting of Mark McGrath from Sugar Ray on the way out. Not a bad little Saturday morning.

My favorite place for breakfast when I'm in town. It's filled with locals and is the most unpretentious place in all of Newport Beach. It is tasty diner breakfast food without having to leave the place smelling like grease.

Don't know why this place has such a bad rep. They make a mean Bloody Mary, so mean it kicks what hangover I have left even after an early winter morning dip in the freezing Pacific Ocean. My friend and I have made it a tradition to wake up early, head down to Newport for a dunk in the water, shiver on the beach in towels while she smokes a post-ocean cigarette, and then head over to Cappy's to fill our stomachs. I've never had a bad meal, in fact the french toast is some of the best I've ever had, the clientele is most amusing, like those two guys that my friend and i tried to figure out whether they were on a date or just friends (they had some interestingly ambiguous body language going on), and again, BLOODY MARY make my mouth water. Who can dis such a colorful place?

Seems like the place to be for the locals. Good looking waitresses, good omelets and coffee. Service was OK. The place was a bit messy, but the vibe was good and very animated. Not a family place, but worth a try if you want to hang with friends or nurse a hangover.

Although they were surprisingly crowded early on Christmas Eve, the staff handled our party of seven -- including two picky adults and a cantaloupe-throwing-seventeen-month-old -- in stride. Pancakes were fair to good, and on the table they have flavored non-dairy creamer for your coffee. (I am partial to the french vanilla, although it is probably causing me to grow tumors.) People at the table were disappointed that their bread products came pre-slathered with butter. And if you're still doing Atkins, you'll be happy to know that there are huge portions of egg whites already on the menu for your ketone-lovin' ways.

Warning! Come in hungry-very large portions ! All tasty and presented incredible we'll. I had a massive BLT and she got the had omelet, fresh corn beef hash! Service was excellent and the place was charming! Would come here all the time if I lived here!

Just this past weekend my friends and i were in California driving down PCH and didn't know what to get for breakfast. My friend saw tons of people coming and going from Cappy's cafe, after reading reviews on Yelp about this place we decided to stop have have breakfast there. It was amazing, the Cappy's girl were on top of everything checking on us to make sure we were okay, refilling our drinks without asking us and basically our drinks were never empty. I had a Bacon Burger, it was delicious OMG just thinking about it is making my mouth water (lol).

Was OK, the wait for 9 AM wasn't long. Some very interesting characters in this place DANG! Ordered the 2 eggs [cooked perfect], 2 bacon stripes and 3 pancakes and cannot discuss the cakes they were HORRIBLE. I might give it another try we'll see?

  • Jim R.

Ate here for breakfast and was pleased. Crab omelet and bloody Mary... Need I say more? The omelet was superb and the portions were huge. I could not finish. But unlike all the reviews I read, the bloody Mary was good; not great. Service was fantastic and, as a party of eight, we were seated very quickly. Growing up in Orange County, my wife and I wondered why we had not been here before... It is now part of our breakfast rotation.

Visiting the area and late for breakfast, but not ready to give up on it. I turned to Yelp and found this little gem. Following reviews on here and 4square, I went for the fresh daily made hash and biscuits and gravy. The service started a little slow, but settled in nicely once the cute girl got caught up. The food, as good as any favorite breakie place. The biscuits and gravy were not the "best in California" and still very good. The Hash really took me by surprise. THE HASH IS NOT TO BE MISSED if you like this dish. I devoured the biscuits and gravy and saved half the hash and one of the 3 eggs for later. The portions are large. Great value.

This cafe is great! I found it from using Yelp and I would also highly recommend it! The portion sizes are huge! And the service is AMAZING! The place is crazy during the hours they are open (6am-3pm). When we first ordered with how busy it was, I was worried how long it would take to get our food, but after ordering, within 10 mins or less the hot food was out! Some of the quickest service I've seen! And by the time you get up from the table the staff already has your table cleaned and are seating the next guests! They run very efficiently! Can't wait to go back!

Amazingly good food, great service ! Looks like your regular cafe/diner but is so much more. Impressed by the tasty food and quick service. The food does not go cold in this place. It is awesome. Shrimp tacos and pancakes are a must. Omlettes are great too. If you go there you will definitely go back again!

Food is mediocre at best. Scrambled eggs with my corned beef hash were raw in the middle. Had to ask for my toast to be delivered. Ranchera sauce looks like chili. Service leaves a lot to be desired. Would not come back.

Want good food bar none? Eat here. Let Nichole get your coffee, she will keep it full. Nick does a radical job keeping this place simple and the food awesome. The years that Gina was there rocked, Tara is amazing and the newbies like Nichole (Hostes and coffee pro! my cup was never half empty and it was busy.) give that touch of Newport Beach that is needed. I have lived here for 15 years and have eaten here for a long time. Always good...period. Excellent parking and you can have coffee if there is a wait. Nice right? Very clean bathrooms and some mouthwash gratis. Good touch Nick.

  • Lora H.

To me, mediocre food. Lots of big people who are there maybe for the large portions? We had the Juevos Rancheros. The salsa was good but the food was otherwise unremarkable. Very attentive service so for that I'll give it 3 stars rather than 2. The parking lot was full, so I hoped it'd be good but maybe it's just a habit for a lot of regulars. If you want gravy with breakfast, then this is the place to be!

  • Ian D.

It's been a very long time since I've been to Cappy's and I'm glad to say nothing's changed. Bottom line? Text book comfort food delivered in classic diner fashion at a decent price. Nothing spectacular, but everything is solid good. The service is super fast, efficient and friendly and the bar drinks are reasonable. You'll like the portions as well, especially breakfast. Chicken fried steak and eggs with hash browns, biscuits and gravy is done the right way.

Driving the Pacific Coast Highway can make one hungry, so scouting out a place for lunch can be as important as the view. Only open 6am until 3pm Cappy's knows their abilities. The friendliest staff and good food made this stop a winner. Nothing fancy other than the service with the best attention to details outside of 4stars.

Cappy's has been around since the Big Bang...almost as long as I have! You remember the Big Bang, don't you? That was when Gidget and Moon Doggie and all their friends had big day of surfin' and singin' and dancin' and then finished the day with a big watermelon roast on the beach! They all threw the watermelon on the fire and then (when the watermelon went "bang"), they all ran off in to the dark and...well you know the rest of joke. Anyway, the following morning, they all needed a big pile of calories to get their energy levels up for another day of doing pretty much the same thing all over again. They asked good old Cappy to make them a ginormous breakfast. He did and, in the process, created a NPB legend! I had a similar experience, but in reverse...the Beautiful Carin and I roasted a watermelon last night and then I ran the Corona del Mar Scenic 5K this morning, bright and early! After the race, I needed a big and healthy (OK, that's a stretch) breakfast, stat! And I found it (as I often do), at Cappy's! There are literally a million (figuratively speaking) choices for breakfast around Newport Beach, but honestly, there aren't many better than Cappy's when you're looking for big food at reasonable prices. There's nothing fancy about Cappy's restaurant...it's an old building, right on the PCH (but it's clean and well kept, including the bathrooms)...it always smells great when you walk in and you are always greeted with smile and a friendly "Howdy do"! The staff is happy, accommodating and I never lack for friendly conversation or coffee refills when I breakfast at Cappy's. You will notice that there isn't much that's fancy about the menu, either...but that's not really the point of Cappy's...they don't do fancy very well. No, they do regular, they do a great job of it and they give you plenty of it...maybe more food per dollar than just about any place in NPB! My après' race chicken fried steak and eggs, with biscuits and gravy and a huge pile of hash browns (with a big bloody mary...I'm an athlete, I just run it off) was inexpensive, satisfying and tasty! $10.95 for the CFS and $3.50 for the bloody...I can handle that! The Beautiful Carin thoroughly enjoyed her vegetarian skillet and my Lovely Daughter Whitney had a side of peaches (not peach slices...6 peach halves!) and a half bowl of oatmeal that took two sturdy busser's to carry out to the table! We left Cappy's happy, full and (for me at least) suitably retoxed! Cappy's is a regular stop on my paper route and if you're looking for a big and tasty breakfast, you could do far worse than to stop in where the surf crowd has been hanging out since 1957. You could tell them that Moon Doggie sent you, but you'll get more respect if you let them know the Alpha Dog sent you.

Reliable breakfast place. Definitely popular. I've never seen it calm and heck who wouldn't want to grab some breaky from a staff full of college students who definitely keep the men coming back. The food is good and I mean that. Not shocked in a bad or a good way and sometimes you like to get pancakes that taste like good ol' pancakes, not that I couldn't use some chocolate in those babies. fun fact: very large portions. Unless you have a sick desire to finish whatever's on your plate no matter the size...like me, you may want to bring a growing lad with you to finish that half order of oatmeal that could feed 4.

More like CRAPPY's. RUDE waitress. She didn't know the menu, and she yelled at us. We have never been treated so poorly before. The southwestern chicken salad was HUGE, and it wasn't tossed with the ranch dressing. It was extremely difficult to eat. The chicken was super processed and gross. By the way, the waitress asked what kind of dressing I would like. I said, "Oh, just the ranch. That's what it says on the menu." It did have ranch, but it was on the side and not tossed. I told the waitress that it wasn't tossed, and she said that they just put it on the side. When I told her that the menu says that it is tossed with ranch, she said, "The menu changes so much, so I don't know." Wow. The waffle was soggy and not anything special. Some of our food waited underneath the heat lamp for a while. The plates were burning hot, and the heat cooked the yolks of the eggs in the huevos rancheros. Awful experience with terrible food and rude service. I have written many reviews, and this is for sure one of the worst. This place should be ashamed.

The best breakfast anywhere around. Went two days in a row. First time on a Friday morning and the cooks nailed it. my favorite omelette is the havarti cheese, mushroom, avocado. great mimosa Saturday morning. It was obvious the cooks were hung over because they were way off their game. hashbrowns were cold, they put an entire salad of spinach in my omelette and forgot to make any of the pancakes. poor poopsies. this place is loaded with short-shorts, boobies, tats and piercings. God Bless America

Should be called crappy's cafe. The service is fast and good but according to the reviews, my meal fell short of my expectations. The atmosphere is too much and noisy, they refilled my lemonade with water, the food got out to us quickly but was carelessly put together. My brother got a breakfast burrito in which was not scrambled but layered. My corned beef hash and eggs was too sweet and my eggs weren't fully cooked. My sister in law got an omelette and was extremely greasy. But I mean my nephew got grilled cheese and liked it. Go him. Overall go somewhere else. The reviews made it seem good but it wasn't. Also they called my sister in law my mom. She's 26 I'm 17

We stopped here while on vacation in the area. It was not very busy on a Wednesday afternoon at 1:00. Ordered BLT with fruit. The bread was mediocre, the sandwich was very cold (isn't BLT supposed to have warm bacon?), the fruit was cut in HUGE chunks and the waitress wasn't very attentive. We won't be back on the next vacation

we paid 50 bucks for breakfast. My husband and kids had pancakes and I had chorizo and eggs. Pancakes were dry and flavorless, my chorizo and eggs tasted weird. ( something was amok with them, I was afraid I might get the runs or something) Needless to say 90% of our food was left on our plates. On the bright side the waitress was a sweetheart. However I wont be going back.

I'm assuming counting and filling 6 glasses of water is considered "Senior" staff level of difficulty. We came here a few Sundays ago for Bloody Mary's and Breakfast, recommended from a friend's friend (Will no go from his recommendations anymore) Service was all over the place and the food/wait was forever. The only think in constant flow was the booze (Hence 2 stars). Every one of the artificial blonde waitresses were just too busy twirling hair and talking to acknowledge us. To our waitstaff: Please stop trying to stuff your shotput thighs into XS shorts.... let some more blood flow into your brain. You will be able to count faster... and move quicker.... instead of starting fires in your crotch from the constant friction of flesh on denim. I feel bad for their shorts.. and my eyes. :( Anyways - Only one waitress (Brunette) was kind enough to make sure we have our water, food, refills, etc... but she was too busy helping the rest of the restaurant. Burger was "Meh".. fries were good, but it takes skill to fuck them up. Our orders were missing toast, utensils, etc. The only delicious thing.. the Bloody Mary's... those were worth the shitty service for a nice buzz.

It's OK. Nothing special really. The location is cool - the surfer vibe is cool. The waitresses are hot ... some much more than others. Their portions are ridiculously large. You could easily split a plate between two people and have plenty of food. Service is pretty quick - coffee and water refills happen often. My ex used to call this place crappy's... haha.

I have been coming to the Newport Beach area for years and had been meaning to stop in and have breakfast at Cappy's. Well, this May my wife and i popped in to give it a try.I don't know what all the fuss about this place is about? It was just ok.Nothing special. What you get for the amount you pay,it just wasn't worth it.The waitress was real nice and efficient, but the food was just the same old.I think i will stick to the Sugar Shack,Mutt's or No ka oi.

Was here for lunch. Dry, tasteless chicken in Chinese Chicken salad and chicken noodle soup. Turkey sandwich on sourdough bread was dry as a bone. Bread was stale. Totally unacceptable. It was the coldest day of the year yet A/C blowing full blast from vent directly over dining room creating a strong cold breeze. I've driven by for years and know people who swear by this place. After my first visit, I shall not return.

I'm taking a break from the good old Cappy's. The prices have gone up on the cheapest items, while the expensive ones remain the same. I don't get it. A "cup" of oatmeal, which is probably the most inexpensive dish to serve is $4. However, you can get an assortment of meats, three eggs, veggies, with toast for $9. Time to balance those prices. This is a true local gem. The food is excellent. The service is excellent. I really can't say enough about it. If you come during rush hour you might run into the normal seating wait, so be warned. The locals eat here religiously, so if you come and its packed, don't leave. Just sit down, people watch, and enough your turn at this great establishment.

Cappy's is a staple for us after surfing and Sunday breakfast. Large portions of home style food and good quality. Try egg burrito with chicken sausage...

Happy working, friendly people. Prices are just right and its in a great place. the ocean is a hop skip and a jump away. They also have all different types of hot sauces as well, which made my eyes water in embarrassment which made others laugh so I can't really complain. The food was great and the selections were very wide ranged. I would recommend coming here as much as you can if you are visiting or living in the area. You'll be going home with food because that's how much you're going to get, and I eat big!

Decent food for a great price. Crushed the ham skillet today. Knocking one star off because of the service.

Chorizo and eggs with refried beans was the special of the day, but there was nothing special about it. After reading lots of great reviews I was excited to go here while on a short vacation but was sorely disappointed. Chorizo did not taste right, didn't have the right consistency and the refried beans were soupy and lacked flavor. 3 stars for prompt and friendly service but I won't be coming back anytime soon.

A true hit with my family anytime for breakfast. Never been disappointed off the breakfast menu. Warning, don't try the enchiladas. I learned. Great omelets and hash. Phenomenal pancakes. Try this place!

The place is just slippn, last two-three times i was there, bacon was about 6 hours old & burnt, food tepid, and person I went with wasnt happy about the quality of her food either, price going up food going down. May stick to the harbor house. GENEROUS 3 stars here could be worse, I suspect the club sandwich will keep this at 3 even if the next breakfast sucks

Finally had a chance to try this place. I had been in the mood for some top notch French Toast for a long time so I ordered their plate. The server was pretty fast it only took, under 7 min to get it. When I got the food, the bacon was cold. The french toast was soggy and luke warm. When I talked to the MGR, she asked if I ate the food. There wasn't very much and I said yes, I asked her if they made this fresh. How could it come out so quickly, cold if it was fresh? She said it was, and couldn't answer the question, other then it was fresh...but cold??.... She said that she wouldn't do any thing about it, cause I had eaten it. Personally, spending over $10 for 2 cool pieces of bread slathered in light batter that was pretty blan. Good lesson learned. Let them continue to fool people that this is good food. I will not return to this place, because I don't think it was fresh. It can't cool off in such a short time. Then tell me it is...tisk tisk...Maybe it was some other persons that didn't want it. Either way, I'm done with them.!

Excellent, excellent service!! I come here quite a bit and the service is always great. The breakfast is delicious! Best turkey sausage!! They also have great coffee (they give you flavored creamers) and tasty sandwiches. The chicken caesar wrap is great (get it with the spinach tortilla)! I haven't had a bad meal here yet!

I had a good experience here! My boyfriend and I were starving, so we headed here. We like to try out new breakfast spots. This however, was not our best experience. The good was good, nice big portions (perfect for hangovers) and the crab in our omelets was great!! However, I don't eat meat, and was excited about the side of potatoes until I realized they were mixed with bacon (which was not advertised on the menu) so I had to sub in fruit. Not a big deal, just bummed me out. The waitress we had was extremely distracted and not the most helpful. But overall, we liked it here - just been to too many much better places.

I actually really like this place. Its the go-to spot for me and my roomates on a hungover sunday morning after a heavy night of drinking at the newport bars. Its the perfect fix to help fix your sickness. Been here 2 to 3 times now and each time we just had to start off with mimosas or bloody marys. I mean whats a better way to fix a hangover than drinking more alcohol right? The wait on sunday around brunch time is pretty redics id say about 20-40 minutes. The place isn't too big. The employees are pretty much all female and another plus is that if you ask they will play the sunday football games for you while you eat. PERFECT! Women football and breakfast. The menu has a wide variety of breakfasts from pancakes to steak and egg to breakfast burritos and omelettes all for a pretty decent price. The meal I remember the most was the country fried steak and eggs with biscuits and gravy, which was made perfect. I havnt really found a spot with good biscuits and gravy until this place. The gravy is salty with bacon bits and the biscuit is so freaking soft. I will def come back here again and will continue to recommend this place to more people. xxxx. |(o)(o)| ( (__) ) | ( ) | \__/ Jordan

I'm sad to say thus is the last morning I will be going here. I have been coming here for the last 5 yrs. I come here w my family at least once a week. The staff that stays that can manage the owners strict rules and yelling. The food has never been amazing but the home fry potatoes and bloody Mary's have always kept us coming. My husband and I always go there basically as a sat morning starter , we have two double Mary doubles each one of us. We get food and are three kids do also, we spend some good money there. We sadly stopped today are trips here. The bad food on top of the bloody Mary prices going up today was the deal breaker. We were told staff came in today and got notified bloody Mary's were upped by $2.00 for no reason. I know there's not a drought in vodka but it happened. I am now paying club prices for a morning drink!!!! $40.00 in 2'double bloody Mary's. Crazy!!!!! I rather go to gallaghers downtown with food and cheap drinks w endless mimosas for $10.00. ... See -ya cappy's, it was fun.

We have lived in Newport almost a year and just found this place. Wow I can't believe we missed out on great breakfasts for the last year.

Decent breakfast, I prefer to go during the week or late breakfast since it can get pretty packed. They close at 3pm. They make a decent bloody mary, but they are way too small for my liking. To go is a must if you just need some food and can take it right back home.

I had breakfast here while on a work trip. The service was fantastic but I did not enjoy the food at all. Too many onions in the potatoes! Nothing to write home about here!

Never returning here. The owner tried to bully us into paying the full bill when we presented an OC Register daily deal coupon code, telling us we must have the printed copy to redeem it. Not in the fine print, so we tried to reason with him. He wouldn't have it. He threw a full scale tantrum at us, screaming "So you want ME to buy YOU breakfast???". He embarrassed us, loudly, in front of other customers, and we left (leaving only a generous tip for the poor waitress) feeling horrible and disappointed that an otherwise pleasant dining experience was ruined by a rude and dishonest business owner. I will never return here with such an awful customer service experience.

Breakfast on a weekend HOTSPOT on PCH. I rank their biscuits and gravy right up there with Gramma's. I want their recipe :) Beach burritos are fab and HUGE. I'd like to see a 300-lb linebacker finish one. Service is good, although they mess up on occasion. It comes with the "I'm a college girl waiting on tables while I wait to become the next supermodel/actress star" kind of vibe going. I've never had a cup of coffee but when I come with friends and they order it, I've never seen such lightening speed when it comes to refills. Ditto for the water. Parking is hard to come by on a weekend so I'd recommend carpooling. Or riding a bike and enjoying the ocean breeze and working off the meal on the way home!

Went to Cappy's for Easter Brunch. I was super excited to see no line outside as there usually is on the weekends. I LOVED it! It is your typical beach house dining experience, for those of us that grew up near or on the beach this is what you want. A bar open 7 days a week at 6am....yep! Count me in, not to mention there is a pation area; not very large but it's there! Food was delicious, bloody mary was fantastic and last but definitely not least....they have flavored coffee creamer!!! I wasn't extremely impressed with the service but then again it's not the type of place you go to for good service!

I worked here for years in high school. And I love going back. I'm a local kid who grew up on Beach Burritos and Greek Omlettes. Nick runs that place like a well oiled machine. Love all the girls I use to work with (some are still there). For those of you who call those girls uneducated, most of them have degrees. They work day jobs during the week and make more money there than they would at a 9-5 job. They are that good. Obviously parking sucks there. IT'S NEWPORT. For those of you who don't understand that, you are obviously not a local. It's a fun place to have some greasy homestyle breakfast and some bloody's while jammin to some 80's tunes. Everyone knows everyone. And those are the things that very city needs. People wait 30 minutes to have yummy food and a nice weekend. Hours: Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri 7am-3pm Wed 10am-10pm (Prime Rib Night) Sat & Sun 7am-4pm

I've been coming to Cappy's for years and I love it. If everyone could work as hard as these waitresses, the world would run so much smoother. These girls bust their butts. I give them a lot of credit. This place is my favorite weekend breakfast spot. Its always packed, but service is so fast, the wait is usually not that long. The Bloody Marys are delicious. I always get the Chorizos. It isn't authentic, but it has a good flavor. I've been in CDM for a bit and most restaurants in the area act totally snooty, but this place is nice change to the "typical Newport attitude." Love it!

I came here two days in a row this week while here for work. Got in around 6:30 am both days and was of course seated right away. The service was nice and efficient. I ordered the breakfast burrito the first day which was really filling and the second day I ordered the 3 hotcakes and eggs - word of advice - the hotcakes are HUGE - I barely ate 1. Order accordingly. The prices did seem kind of steep though for the type of place though - perhaps that's just a Newport Beach thing. Either way, I'd come back when I'm in the area again.
